Government scheme 'to create largest EV network'

01 July 2009

A new government initiative that is designed to encourage low-emission vehicles may result in one of the largest electronic vehicle (EV) schemes in operation, according to one group.

The government is investing £25 million in the Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator initiative, which is to make 500 sites across the UK capable of providing charging facilities, those with eco car insurance may be interested to read.

Brighton-based Elektromotive will be responsible for most of the work. The firm claims that the project could pre-empt Britain establishing the largest EV networks in operation.

Its managing director, Calvey Taylor Haw, states the scheme will "place the UK at the forefront of global efforts to accelerate widespread uptake of electric vehicles".

The scheme will begin with eight consortia running 340 EVs across Oxford, London, Glasgow and north-east England.

A range of other parties will also be active in the scheme, with universities, development agencies, power companies and manufacturers all receiving assistance via the £25 million of funding that the government is making available.

Earlier this year, the government said that a "transition to a low-carbon world will transform [the UK's] economy". It also said that 19 per cent of the UK's CO2 emissions come from road traffic.
