Drivers can use website to check green car credentials

03 August 2009

Motorists looking to invest in a new green vehicle but unsure of the best model might want to visit a website that provides car ratings for consumers.

Portal WhatGreenCar.com offers visitors a comprehensive system that highlights the green credentials of more than 20,000 models.

Providing free environmental impact ratings, the website could help eco car insurance policyholders go even greener by selecting the cleanest vehicle on the road.

Consumers using the data to compare vehicles can check aspects of how vehicles use fuel via the fuel and vehicle cycles analysis section, while the emissions inventory looks at all four EU regulated emissions and the three main gases associated with road transport.

The impact assessments are carried out to gauge the effects of emissions rather than just showing output levels and utilises an environmental rating tool first developed by the European Cleaner Drive Programme.

Vehicles are also scored in terms of how green their manufacture and assembly cycle is, with levels ranging from zero (no environmental impact) to 100.

"The transport sector is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases and many companies produce rating systems to establish how green a vehicle is. However, none offer such a complete, comprehensive system as the WhatGreenCar.com ratings," the portal comments.

In June, the website named the new Toyota Prius WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2009 from a shortlist of ten finalists for its impressive CO2 ratings and seamlessly integrated green features.
