Nissan reveals all-electric vehicle

03 August 2009

Nissan has revealed its first all-electric vehicle at its new headquarters in Yokahama, Japan.

The Leaf has been designed to be affordable for consumers of green cars and a lithium-ion battery powers the medium-sized chassis, which seats five adults and can travel more than 100 miles before needing a recharge.

Nissan's president and chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn called the new product a "tremendous achievement" and said the company took "great pride" in it.

"We have been working tirelessly to make this day a reality - the unveiling of a real-world car that has zero - not simply reduced - emissions," Mr Ghosn explained.

Key features of the Leaf include a zero-emissions power train, affordability and a connected mobility: advanced intelligent transportation system.

Its name takes inspiration from the environment as its carbon-free design was conceived to help protect from harmful substances.

Exact pricing details for the Leaf have not yet been announced although Nissan expects the car to be priced in the range of a well-equipped C-segment vehicle.

In addition to this, the manufacturer hopes to secure a range of local, regional and national tax breaks for drivers of the Leaf.

Meanwhile, WhatCar has urged consumers to consider the environmental impact of their vehicle.

It claims that the transport sector is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases and advises motorists to take advantage of the ratings many companies now provide to assess the greenness of a vehicle.
