BMW selects Korean batteries for electric vehicle

04 August 2009

BMW has announced that it will use a Korean manufacturer to supply the batteries for its new electric car.

The firm has contracted SB LiMotive to be the exclusive supplier for its next-generation electric vehicle, which it plans to produce the first prototypes for in 2010.

BMW anticipates the car will go into mass production three years later, with SB LiMotive supplying lithium ion batteries between 2013 and 2010.

"SDI will supply the batteries for test cars from next year. The deal is an exclusive between the SB LiMotive and BMW by 2020," SDI spokesman Seo Hae-su said.

The Megacity has been developed from BMW's Project I, which was concerned with developing new mobility systems for cities with more than ten million inhabitants.

The new vehicles is the second green car to come out of the project, after the creation of the hybrid battery-electric-powered Mini E.

Norbert Reithofer, chief executive officer of BMW, confirmed his confidence in SB LiMotive and said he believed the firm will provide top-quality products and service.

SB LiMotive was formed in September 2008 and recently revealed its plans to acquire US supplier Cobasys, which develops energy storage solutions for hybrid electric vehicles.

The American firm is currently owned by Chevron and Energy Conversion Devices and was previously in takeover talks with General Motors.
