Fiat's eco:Drive technology has scooped another major accolade, which may have boosted its profile with green
car insurance customers.
The free-of-charge system picked up the Special Award at Auto Express' New Car Awards this month, after judges were impressed by the technology that is designed to help motorists drive in a more environmentally-friendly manner.
The system allows motorists to download a record of their driving style from their car onto a computer using a USB memory stick and then makes suggestions for improvement.
Auto Express judges praised Fiat for the simplicity of the technology, saying that anything complex would not have been able to attract the wide appeal that eco:Drive has achieved.
It said the "clever" application was an innovative addition to the motor industry that would help motorists reduce their carbon footprint and reduce petrol bills.
"Using the manufacturer's Blue&Me USB interface, it allows motorists to download telemetry from their vehicle, just like a Formula One racer does - only the aim is to help drivers improve their efficiency rather than their pace," explained the panel.
"The free set-up is already being used by 40,000 Fiat owners and is credited with saving a staggering 910,000 kg-plus of CO2."
Users of the system report improvements to their driving of up to 15 per cent, in green terms.
BMW also scooped a series of awards at the ceremony, with its three series convertible and saloon both picking up prizes, while six other more of its products were nominated at the prestigious event.
