Government scrappage scheme halfway over

11 August 2009

Car insurance customers considering swapping their old vehicles for a greener model through the government's scrappage scheme should be aware the initiative is now at the halfway mark.

Currently, motorists are offered up to £2,000 off the price of a new green car if they trade in their ten-year or older vehicles in, as the modern models are thought to be more environmentally-friendly.

According to recently released government figures, a total of 154,927 orders for new cars have already been placed through the scheme, with most purchases occurring in the south-east, east and north-west of England.

Lord Mandelson, secretary of state for business, said: "I'm pleased that we have already achieved over 150,000 new car orders. This is a great deal for manufacturers and dealers, not to mention the customers."

The government claims new cars typically emit 25 per cent less carbon fumes than those of the age eligible for scrapping.

New cars churn out around 133.9 g/km of emissions while old vehicles are responsible for an estimated 179 g/km of carbon fumes.

Earlier this year, Carcraft revealed whether buying a green vehicle or petrol-guzzler silver is still the most popular colour for body work.

The firm's survey found that 31 per cent of cars were bought in this colour in 2008, while blue vehicles were popular with 25 per cent of motorists buying a new auto.
