Carbon-guzzling cars 'impact negatively on health'

18 August 2009

Motorists in the north-east of England are being reminded of the negative impact carbon-guzzling cars have on their health by a new campaign.

Be Air Aware has been launched in Tyne and Wear to educate locals on the poor quality of air in the region, which The Journal says could worsen with the area boasting the fastest car ownership growth in the UK over the next ten years.

In a bid to prevent the conditions becoming more severe, the newspaper urges car insurance customers to consider their own driving habits and make alterations.

It advocated "eco-driving" as one step motorists can take tomorrow, which involves adopting a different style when behind the wheel.

"Eco-driving can help reduce the volume of emissions and particulates your car kicks out into the environment," says the newspaper.

"Smarter driving involves using your gears, acceleration and powers of anticipation to adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style."

Meanwhile, those who have chosen to buy a more eco-friendly car to reduce their carbon footprint may be interested to hear the first third generation Toyota Prius arrived in London earlier this week.

More than 2,000 of the vehicles have been preordered with ten per cent of these coming through the government's cash for clangers scheme.
