'Small, green vehicles leading auto market recovery'

20 August 2009

As environmental issues come to the fore, motorists are increasingly opting for small, green cars such as the Volkswagen Golf, figures have shown.

According to the latest data from vehicle intelligence firm Jato Dynamics, the Golf was the most popular model in Europe for the fifth consecutive month in July.

Volkswagen was shown to be the continent's favourite brand, with the Golf topping the leader board once again as small cars saw a boost in sales.

July saw the new car market rise by more than three per cent, which Jato attributes to increased sales of smaller vehicles.

Demand for greener vehicles is also influencing the market, the firm suggests, with the number of vehicles sold running on LPG and compressed natural gas doubling in number.

"The much talked about green shoots of recovery can be seen in the small car segment, which is the greatest beneficiary of scrappage incentives and European customers' desire to move to more affordable cars," commented David Di Girolamo, head of Jato Consult.

Other small cars seeing an increase in sales were the Fiat Panda, which saw a rise of 47 per cent in July, while the Punto saw an increase of 38 per cent for the month.

Volkswagen will soon be launching its Golf Plus BlueMotion, which could appeal to eco car insurance policyholders with its impressive fuel economy of 65.7 miles per gallon and reduced CO2 output of 114 grams per kilometre as a result of green technology being introduced to the model.
