Car maker BMW has announced it will launch its greenest ever 3 Series next year.
The firm suggests that the new 320d EfficientDynamics saloon model will be the first premium vehicle to enter the sub-110 grams (g) of CO2 per kilometre (km) segment when it goes on sale in 2010.
Potentially appealing to
eco car insurance policyholders with a taste for luxury, the vehicle will offer low CO2 output of 109g per km combined with fuel economy of 68.9 miles per gallon.
The model will be powered by a 1,995cc engine fitted with a single turbocharged diesel powerplant.
Despite its green credentials, the vehicle will still boast impressive performance, with a top speed of 137 miles per hour (mph) and the ability to go from zero to 62mph in 8.2 seconds.
The car also aims to heighten motoring comfort through the addition of features that improve smoothness on the road and better absorb bumps.
Among its features will be electric power steering, an auto start stop system, brake energy regeneration, two-zone air conditioning and a multi-function leather steering wheel.
The vehicle will go on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show before entering the market in January 2010.
BMW recently announced that it would be offering diesel power in its 7 Series range with the introduction of a new engine for its 740d model and revised engines for the 730d alternatives. The models can be ordered now for delivery from next month.
