Drivers given eco-friendly tips

24 August 2009

Motorists with an eco-friendly vehicle and green car insurance have been given further advice on how to modify their motoring to help the environment.

As part of the Scottish government's Go Greener travel and transport campaign, business7.co.uk has issued drivers with a series of practical steps to implement, such as leaving their cars in the garage for one day a week and taking the bus to work.

It reminds green car insurance customers that just because they have a vehicle it does not mean they need to use it every day for each journey.

John Scrimgeour, the NorthWest Europe manager for Petro-Canada, told the website that while his car is an essential item he only uses it for journeys he can't make on foot.

The 54-year-old said: "I live within easy walking distance of work so unless I'm going to need the car during the working day, there really is no excuse for driving to work.

"Instead, I walk to and from the office and enjoy it, especially if it's a dry day when I feel like I'm getting to see a bit more of the day than I would if I drove."

Meanwhile, the latest data from vehicle intelligence firm Jato Dynamics has found that an increasing number of motorists are opting for green vehicles.

The most popular eco-friendly car with drivers is the Volkswagen Golf, which was the most popular model in Europe for the fifth consecutive month in July.
