The north-east's dedication to manufacturing eco-friendly vehicles is positioning the region as the leader of the "green revolution", it is claimed.
According to nebusiness.co.uk, the area has been given a huge boost by the news that Nissan will invest £200 million in its Sunderland plant to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles.
The move has sparked speculation that the plant could become a hub for the firm's electric vehicle-related products, potentially creating further jobs in the region.
The business news website says that the electric car market is likely get into gear properly in 2011, when the government has pledged to award up to £5,000 to motorists buying electric cars when trading in older models.
It adds: "Although there are no guarantees that the government's £250 million plan to promote low carbon transport over the next five years will create investment in the north-east, many believe it has a better chance than any other UK region."
Meanwhile, figures released by vehicle intelligence firm Jato Dynamics have revealed that eco-friendly cars are becoming increasingly popular with European consumers.
The Volkswagen Golf has been leading the market for the last five months, while the number of cars running on LPG and compressed natural gas now being sold is rising steeply.
