Volvo logistics test drives rape seed

25 August 2009

In a bid to become more environmentally-friendly, Volvo Logistics is test driving the possibility of using rape seed as an alternative to carbon-intensive fuels.

The manufacturer has entered a joint venture with a series of high street retailers that will see firms such as IKEA and H&M trial the new means of energy from their Swedish operations.

If successful, the alternative could lower Volvo's overall carbon footprint and make green car insurance customers looking for eco-friendly motoring options feel better about buying a vehicle made by the manufacturer.

Susanna Hambeson, environmental manager at Volvo Logistics, said: "Even if we are in the midst of a recession, we have to keep working for the things we regard as important.

"Volvo's corporate values of quality, environmental care and safety are always important."

The move comes as Sweden's first petrol station selling ACP Diesel Bio30 has opened at Skandiahamnen port in Gothenburg, in close proximity to Volvo's plants and Arendal trans-shipment terminal.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Angus Reid Strategies has revealed that Brits, Americans and Canadians are warming to the prospect of swapping their dream car for a green one.

In Canada 53 per cent of those polled would make the switch, along with 48 per cent of Americans and 44 per cent of Brits, reports NorthumberlandView.ca.
