Car data firm supports green labels for used vehicles

27 August 2009

Vehicle information firm HPI has welcomed news that used cars are to benefit from a fuel economy labelling scheme alongside their new counterparts.

The company, which worked with Department for Transport (DfT), the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) and the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership to develop its own CO2 certificates, has outlined its support for the new labels announced by the LCVP.

"We welcome news of the latest CO2 labelling initiative for used cars as this clearly illustrates how essential it is for the industry to work together to make consumers aware of the impact their car buying decisions have," commented Alan Bishop, industry relations director for HPI.

Motorists who make use of the firm's HPI check automatically receive information about their vehicle's environmental performance, while the firm also offers information for dealers to save them having to download the data.

HPI's certificates rank vehicles from A to M across 13 bandings, with A being the segment producing the least amount of CO2. Eco car insurance policyholders can then take this information into consideration when deciding which vehicle to purchase next.

Mr Bishop went on to say that it is becoming more important that motorists are provided with information on the environmental and financial implications of investing in certain vehicles as consumers are becoming increasingly aware that greener cars offer lower tax and running costs.

Vehicles up to two years old will be covered under the new scheme, which will highlight cars' fuel costs over 12,000 miles as well as their eco credentials.
