New engines have been announced for the Alfa 159 range in a bid to generate fewer harmful emissions.
Eco car insurance customers may be pleased that the manufacturer is stepping up to the mark and following the lead of other vehicle makers who have created more environmentally-friendly engines.
The two new engines - the1750 TBi and the 2.0 JTDM - will both be launched into the market later this year, fitted in the Alfa Brera and Alfa Spider models.
A lightweight, direct injection turbocharged offering, the 1750 TBi power plant provides 200 brakehorsepower (bhp) but cuts CO2 output to 189 grams per kilometre (g per km).
The changes made to the engine see the 159 saloon and sportwagon vehicles drop six bands in terms of taxation compared with the older 2.2 JTS engine.
Enhancing the engine's green credentials has not been at the cost of its power, with models fitted with the power plant able to go from zero to 62 miles per hour (mph) in 7.7 seconds, with a top speed of 147mph.
Meanwhile, the firm has also developed a more fuel-efficient version of its new 2.0 JTDM powerplant, which generates 170bhp despite reducing carbon emissions to 142g per km.
The unit can go from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds and boasts a top speed of 136mph.
Alfa recently celebrated its 99th birthday this year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which
eco car insurance policyholders may have attended in July.
