VW set to showcase green models in Frankfurt

04 September 2009

Eco car insurance policyholders may be pleased to read that Volkswagen is poised to showcase three new green models at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The firm has developed BlueMotion versions of its Polo, Golf and Passat models, boasting greatly-reduced CO2 output.

Models have been revamped to reduce aerodynamic drag, contributing to less load on the engine and enhanced economy.

Most efficient in the range is the new Polo, which is fitted with a 1.2-litre common rail diesel engine that can produce 75 ps. Regenerative braking and a start/stop system help the model to cut its CO2 emissions to 87 grams per kilometre and also achieve 85.6 miles per gallon.

The Golf version is fitted with a 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine, creating 105 ps. It boasts more aerodynamic features and longer gearing to ensure the engine's efficiency is optimised.

Meanwhile, the Passat option is also fitted with a 1.6-litre engine, replacing the outgoing 2.0-litre version and returning 64.2 mpg and 114 g of CO2 per km to the Golf's 74.3 mpg and 99 g per km.

With regards to looks, VW states that "each model bears the results of aerodynamic changes with new front bumper, sill extensions, a lower ride height and relocated air ducts behind the grille elements".

VW also recently unveiled its three-door Polo ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, where it will be officially displayed.

The model is said to feature a more aggressive stance and a clutter-free design.
