London 'welcomes low carbon funding'

08 September 2009

Eco car insurance policyholders living in the capital may be interested to hear a new investment in Brixton is expected to make the area a "flagship" for low emissions.

The London borough is one of ten regions to be awarded funding to become a Low Carbon Zone, announced the city's mayor Boris Johnson.

Each of the selected boroughs will receive up to £200,000 for use in various energy efficiency schemes.

According to a statement released by Mr Johnson, the money will boost 'green collar' jobs and help to lower Londoners' bills by becoming more energy efficient.

It is hoped the investment will also tackle the problem of high emissions from some of the city's older buildings, something which has traditionally been difficult to address.

Commenting on the news Brixton had been chosen to take part in the programme, Lambeth councillor Sally Prentice said: "This funding will help support a range of important projects that will make Brixton a flagship low carbon area" and build on environmental work already being done by the council, local residents and businesses.

She pointed to Transition Town Brixton as an example of schemes already operating locally.

According to the project's website, it is a community-led initiative seeking to raise awareness locally about climate change and depleted resources.

Following the confirmation of extra funding, Ms Prentice added that the plan was now "to get every business and household involved so that the area becomes a centre of excellence in carbon reduction that can be replicated across the borough".
