Don't neglect your vehicle, green car insurance customers told

07 July 2009

Green car insurance policy holders and other motorists have been advised against cutting back on vehicle maintenance during the economic downturn.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), people are increasingly down-sizing their budgets for expenditure on cars during the recession, which could have negative long-terms implications.

Research conducted by the organisation found that 29 per cent of brokers, who may sell green car insurance, have seen a reduction in non-essential cover and add-ons for personal and business cover.

Furthermore, 16 per cent of brokers have seen clients reducing sums insured while the same percentage of brokers have experience an increase in excess figures in domestic policy holders.

When asked which types of policies were most affected, 96 per cent said motor or home insurance.

Steve Foulsham, technical services manager at Biba, said: "Whatever you do, don't cut on the maintenance of your vehicle.

"Obviously an insurance policy can only operate within the law. If it needs an MOT, it's got to have an MOT."

He said that if motorists chose to try and get another few thousand miles worth of wear out of their tyres in the event of an accident they could find their insurance is nullified if the treads are found to be worn down too low.

Mr Foulsham concluded that "maintenance is key" and advised green car insurance customers and other motorists to keep this in mind during hard economic times.
