A modified version of a Mercedes A-Class has been developed in ten weeks to illustrate how electric motors can offer a green yet satisfying ride.
The model was reengineered by Zytek using an uprated version of an electric drive system.
During tests, the five-seat model was found to provide the driveability, refinement and quality that motorists would expect from premium brands.
The model was fitted with a plug-in function and modified to increase torque from 120Nm to 160Nm.
Meanwhile, the maximum motor speed rose from 12,000rpm to 13,000rpm to make sure that performance was still optimum at lower speeds.
Battery packs were fitted under the floor, with the vehicle expected to be able to achieve around 120 miles on a combined cycle.
Programme manager Neil Cheeseman commented that while the 40kW power output "doesn't sound much … comparisons with conventional engines are irrelevant because of the completely different torque characteristics".
Zytek Automotive sales and marketing director Steve Tremble commented that one of the reasons behind the build was to show how flexible the system can be in vehicles up to 1,700kg.
"This is a very nice car to drive, with performance and refinement that comfortably meets users expectations," he added.
Mr Cheeseman went on to say that the firm is working on the development of such systems for a premium manufacturer at the moment.
