Electric rental cars 'will soon be widely available'

12 September 2009

A new deal between French car manufacturer Renault and rental company Europcar will include an agreement to speed up the implementation of new zero-emissions policies.

Eco car insurance policyholders may soon be able to hire one of Renault's new fleet of electric vehicles while on holiday, as Europcar plans to roll out the new cars by 2011.

The agreement will be finalised at the Frankfurt motor show on September 16th and the two companies hope it will offer a solution well suited to customers' needs.

Recent research released by Renault suggests that 80 per cent of people in Europe travel less than 40 miles a day, a distance easily achieved with an electric vehicle.

Commenting on the agreement, Europcar chief executive officer Salvatore Catania said: "To address the issue of climate change, Europcar wanted to take things further with Renault by optimising short-term rental solutions suited to electric vehicles.

"We are proud to have our brand and staff involved in such a large-scale project, which is fully in line with our company’s sustainable development strategy and the goals set forth in our Environmental Charter."

This partnership will reinforce Europcar's strategy of taking a greener approach to car rental. The firm first opened a pilot rental location for electric cars in Paris in 1999.

Another eco project making its debut at the Frankfurt motor show is the launch of two new electric cars from Reva, including the sporty NXG.
